Xarelto (chemical name Rivaroxaban) is an anti-coagulant taken orally. The prescription drug, marketed by Bayer, is typically prescribed for people who are at risk for nonhemorrhagic strokes or embolisms. It has also been approved for use during total knee or hip replacement surgery. The FDA has also approved Xarelto for treatment of non-valvular atrial fibrillation.
As an anticoagulant, Xarelto poses a serious risk of uncontrolled bleeding, including internal bleeding. At present, there is no known antidote for the drug. It’s effect customarily lasts 8-12 hours.
