Risperidone, sold under the trade name Risperdal, is a powerful anti-psychotic intended for use in the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorders. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the product has also been used for treatment of what the FDA calls “off-label” or unapproved uses, such as psychosis, aggression and behavioral challenges in elder patients with dementia. As a result, the FDA has required Risperdal’s manufacturer, Janssen-Cilag (owned by Johnson & Johnson) to include what is known as a “black-box warning” on Risperdal labels, advising against the use of the drug for treatment of elder individuals with dementia.
