Prempro falls within the category of drugs known as progestins and contains conjugated estrogens and medroxyprogesterone and acetate. This medication is prescribed to patients in need of hormone replacement therapy. Prempro is used as means of reducing post-menopausal symptoms in women. These symptoms may include hot flashes, vaginal atrophy, irregular menstruation, night sweats, irregular sleep patterns and mood swings.
Studies Find Serious Side Effects Linked to Prempro
Prempro was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1995 as a hormone replacement therapy. Side Effects of varying degrees of severity soon became a concern for health care professionals and their patients after studies linked Prempro to a number of health problems.
A major study of the long term use of Prempro as a hormone replacement therapy found that the drug significantly increases the risk of breast cancer, heart attack, blood clotting and stroke. In addition, Prempro has also been linked to ovarian cancer, lupus, asthma, and pulmonary embolisms. Studies found that Prempro caused a 26% increase in breast cancer, a 29% increase in heart attacks, a 41% increase in strokes and an alarming 100% increase in blood clotting in the legs and lungs.
