Paxil is the trade name for the paroxetine, a powerful antidepressant first marketed by Smith Kline Beecham (now GlaxoSmithKline) around the turn of the 20th century. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted approval of Paxil for a wide range of mental health issues, including:

- General anxiety disorders
- Panic attacks
The FDA also approved Paxil for use by women during menopause to manage the effects of “hot flashes.”
In 2012, GlaxoSmithKline entered into a plea bargain with federal prosecutors, agreeing to pay $3 billion to avoid criminal prosecution related to the marketing of Paxil. Federal officials say the company falsified clinical data, specifically findings showing Paxil might be harmful to teenagers and young adults.
