Talcum Powder Tied to Greater Risk of Ovarian Cancer
More than 50 years ago, scientists discovered what they believed to be a link between the use of talcum powder by women and an increased rate of ovarian cancer. The researchers pointed to findings that showed that many tumors of women with ovarian cancer had talc particles deeply embedded in them.
Since those initial findings, more than 20 studies have corroborated the initial research. A study in 2003 estimated a 30% increase in the risk of ovarian cancer by women using talc and more recent research (2013) found cancer rates up by 20-30 percent.
Scientists say that most talcum powder is made of crushed rock, typically composed of magnesium and silicon. Johnson & Johnson, maker of Shower to Shower, a popular talcum powder, says it was aware of the research, but considered the results inconclusive. Johnson & Johnson is now a defendant in a major lawsuit alleging that its produce causes ovarian cancer.
