Finasteride a product marketed by Merck under the trade names Propecia and Proscar, is a drug approved by the FDA in 1992 for male-pattern baldness, as well as enlargement of the prostate. Propecia has been linked to a number of health risks, including:
- dizziness or weakness
- abnormal swelling in hands and breasts
- headaches and flu-like symptoms
Many Propecia users have also reported problems with sexual function, from premature ejaculation to impotence.
A 2015 study concluded that the clinical trials for Propecia failed to include adequate information or mechanisms to gauge safety of use. Researchers found limited information on potential toxicity issues, as well as a predisposition to underreport any adverse effects.
