Ritalin is a prescription stimulant containing dextro-methylphenidate and is the most common medication used to treat ADHD throughout the world. Although the drug is a stimulant, it is believed to create a calming effect on children suffering from ADHD. Ritalin was approved by the FDA in 1980 but has more recently caused concern due to side-effects leading to heart attacks, strokes and increased blood pressure.
