I’m attorney Keith Spencer, a board certified family law attorney with Bailey and Galyen. Most courts today are conducting hearings and trials via media platforms such as Zoom these days instead of in person proceedings. But make no mistake, these remote hearings are still court proceedings and require the same decorum and preparation as an in person hearing. Covid fatigue has led some litigants to treat such hearings with an informality unbefitting the dignity of the court. A court hearing is a serious event. Novelty computer generated backgrounds, informal dress, and distracting behavior on camera will damage your case.
If you have a zoom hearing, do not participate from your car or in your pajamas. Do not eat, smoke, or try to manage children during your hearing. Treat the hearing exactly as you would an in person hearing and dress and behave with the same care as you would at the courthouse. Remote hearings are a very serious undertaking.
